Ensis ensis
Size:   up to 20cm
Overview: It is known for its elongated, rectangular shape, whose similarity to the straight razor gives it its name. The dorsal margin is straight while the ventral margin is curved. Razor shells have a fragile shell, with open ends. The shell is smooth on the outside and whitish in colour, with vertical and horizontal reddish-brown or purplish-brown markings separated by a diagonal line. It has an olive-green skin like covering over the shell . The inner surface is white with a purple tinge.
They live under the sand and can burrow faster than a man can dig

Where to See: Look for these unusual shells which get washed up along the shoreline
