Mytilus edulis

Size: up to 15cm
Overview: In most marine mussels the shell is longer than it is wide, being wedge-shaped or asymmetrical. The external colour of the shell is often dark blue, blackish, or brown. Mussels feed on microscopic sea creatures. Marine mussels are usually found clumping together on wave-washed rocks. The clumping habit helps hold the mussels firm against the force of the waves.

Where to See: Anywhere on the shore, the living Mussel can also be found underneath the seaweed.
