Seen: May-August

Overview:
A striking insect with black and yellow rings along
the length of the abdomen. This is the UKs largest dragonfly. The bright
green eyes meet only at a point on the top of the head.
Very strong
flyers often seen flying low over the ground chasing food, normally smaller
flies.
The female lays her eggs in clear shallow streams, although the insect may
be seen a long way from the breeding streams.
Where to See:
These dragonflies can be seen over the marshland areas, if watched for a
while you will notice that they tend to use certain prominent twigs/grasses
to land on, always coming back to these same places to eat any food they
have caught.
